Kennebunkport, Maine to Tallahassee, Florida

What is the best route?
  • Much as I like Barnyard and that little home style southern food place nearby, I Wouldn't drive that far east to get to Tallahassee. I do use 441 thru Ga on my way N/S when time is not a factor. Lots of nice two lane roads thru rural Ga.

wow...we go from Ct to Tally....2 to 3 times a year..never ever would go to Tenn to get there...while there are a cpl variations to these directions..this is how I go most of the time....
From Me... would come down 95 to 495 to 90 to 84 west.....to Newburgh,NY..then 87 south to 287 west for 45 miles to 78 west to 81 west....stay on 81 west to Whystesville ,Va...take 77 south to Columbia,SC...and then 20 west to Madison,Ga...pick up Ga rt 83...want to think it is exit 113.. but it is rt 83..great 2 laner...that trucks use ,also....stay on 83 to 75 south to exit 101...pick up rt 300..Florida-Ga tpke to Albany ,Ga...there get on rt 19 down to Thomasville,Ga to Tally....all great roads fo an RV and some great campgrounds to stop at......no major cities to get bogged down in....Chuck
  • Also learned the hard way don't leave Maine on a Sunday. Everybody leaves Maine on Sunday.
  • Two suggestions for the Georgia part of the trip. 1. Get off I-75 just south of Chattanooga and take US 27 all the way to Tallahassee, it is great 4 lane highway with little traffic. 2. Get off I-75 in Cordele and take Ga 300 to Albany and get on US-19 to Tallahassee.
  • Thanks for the information. I did think it might be best to avoid I 95 now I know I was correct.
  • If you go as far South as Tifton on 75 you might as well stay on 75 to I10. No big city traffic anywhere along that stretch once you are south of Atlanta and Macon. 75 from Knoxville to past Macon can often be bumper to bumper depending on time of day and day of week. If I overnight near Knoxville I leave about 9am which avoids rush hour near Atlanta and south from there. If heading to the panhandle I prefer heading to Birmingham instead of Atlanta. That way you connect with I10 West of Tallahassee with less stress.

Also, I like 101 to Manchester, NH then north to Concord to pick up 9 west to Brattleboro. From there I have used 7 to Troy but not with my big rig. I like 91 south from Brattleboro to 90 or 84 or 87 to 287 to 78 to 81. I travel to/from Fla and Boothbay every year. I have used all the usual routes over the years and the only one I totally hate is 95 from the Boston area to Richmond. They all have plusses and minuses, and drive times and mileage are surprisingly similar.
  • I agree with Big Katuna but we take I-81S to I-40 west (through Knoxville) to I-75. Straight down I-75 to Tifton, exit US 319 to Moultrie-Thomasville-Tallahassee and Sopchoppy. lizzie
  • 9 West across Maine to near Lake George to 87S to 88W to 81S to 77S to 26E to 301S to 10W.

Very scenic, better roads than 95. 95 and 80 are terrible roads.
