Thanks Tom.Barb. I did a Google search on the outfitter that I mentioned my neighbor had used. That search showed many pictures of successful Kings that has been caught, but no mention of the King season closure until I booked the trip. After I gave the outfitter my CC information, he mentioned that the King season was shut down, but he could provide pink salmon fishing guide service.
I am not paying an outfitter to fish for pinks. You can go to Valdez and catch pink salmon all day long from shore and for free. I think your idea about making a call is a good one.
I made this post to read about experiences that others have had with outfitters in Alaska. Hopefully others will chime in.
