Kusawa Lake campground, problems?

I notice on the Yukon Govt website they mention only 26 sites and the boat launch are open at Kusawa Lake CG. They don't give any explanation as to why the other sites are closed (aren't there 50+ total?)

Can anyone who's been through comment on the status of the CG?

  • I'm printing out these suggestions and sticking it in with my maps... thank you Sue and everyone.
  • Oh, also, the Takhini River campground on the way into Kusawa Lake campground is also a nice spot.
  • Pine Lake campground near Haines Junction is pleasant enough.

Congdon Creek campground on the shores of Kluane Lake is one of our favourite campgrounds ... the area is very scenic. It is at about km 1666 on the Alaska Highway. About a 2 hour drive from the Kusawa Lake turn-off.

Dezadeash Lake is also very nice, about 30 minutes past Haines Junction on the Haines Highway. Popular fishing spot too.
  • I wont be there till almost the end of the month (around aug 25), so I will roll the dice. if it's packed, I'll just push on toward alaska and find someplace else to spend the night
  • Actually, it makes for a crowded campground.

Kusawa Lake is popular with locals because it is close to Whitehorse and has terrific scenery and fishing. Some spend much time there, some leave their RVs there (even though there are rules against doing this). Thus it is almost always fully occupied.

With the closure of half the campground, the remaining half will be even busier now.

It can also be party-central on weekends. Especially the upcoming long weekend - Discovery Day on August 19 this year.

Water levels have been high this year. The road into Kusawa Lake washed/flooded out last year. This year it did so again, and also the lower campground took some damage.
  • According to this link:, heavy rains have led to closure of two CG loops (landslide danger) and damage to road in the loop that remains open.
