LA to Big Sur, ca via Hwy 1?

I've spent the last two days reviewing prior posts and see conflicting posts so I decided to ask here please. How is the drive from LA to Big Sur via Hwy 1? I'll be pulling a 35' fifth wheel and I'm comfortable taking my time. I saw where Hwy 101 is an easier drive so which route might I consider from Hwy 101 to the Hwy 1?And any recommendations of which campground? We will be in the area late September. Thanks all

I have done Highway 1 several times in my 35' DP towing a Dodge Dakota. So I'm probably longer than you overall and I did it just fine. The only difference being I always do it going South. Most of the turnouts are on the ocean side of the road. You won't be able to pull out and let traffic pass as often going North and you won't be able to stop and enjoy the views as often.

Driving the road or not is all about the driver. You will see people on here who tell you they have done it and they were scared to death all the way and they would never ever do it again. That is just a person who is either scared of heights, or is just not all that comfortable driving their rig. I do notice a lot of those people come from the east coast where they maybe aren't used to driving in hills with large cliffs a few feet from the side of the road. If you want to see some of the best places California has to offer, you have to get off the freeway and get on the two lane mountain roads.

X2. I've noticed the same thing. Google earth the route and "drive" it in the "street view" mode at the places that may concern you.
  • Thank you all! Great info. We appreciate you taking the time to answer.
    Good camping and stay safe.

  • Rocky2 has good advice.
Start you Hwy 1 leg at Morro Bay.

Hwy 1 from LA is lots and lots of surface streets, red lights and is really a broken route through towns and cities. Take 101 to Morro Bay.
  • One usually thinks of the road to Big Sur northbound as starting at Morro Bay. Morro Bay SP has limited hookups. We prefer San Simeon SP just north of Cambria. It is close to Hearst Castle and begins the coastal drive north. Campgrounds north are limited. Kirk Creek and Plaskett are forest service campgrounds and are dry camping only. Take your time driving Hwy 1 and double the time you think it will take between stops. Still a great drive.
