I would take US60 all the way to Paducah, then I-24 to KY 453. KY 453 is the road down the middle of LBL. It changes numbers to TN 49 at the KY/TN state line. Take it south to US79, then US79 into Clarksville, TN. Pick up I-24 again to Nashville.
Weather may be anything--decent but cool, ice storms, pouring rain. Be prepared.
Wrangler's Campground is the only developed campground that is open in December. You might need reservations if you are coming in on a weekend and want a site with water and sewer.
Go to landbetweenthelakes.us for details of facilities and maps. Check carefully for what is open. Wrangler's is fairly close to the small town of Cadiz, KY which has some services and amenities. There are also KY state parks close by, which are options if you don't like Wranglers.
