Latest Montreal Reports

I have stayed at a little road next to the Montreal Walmart at Jean-Talon for many years.

Now, this road is a no parking zone. I'm currently in the Walmart parking lot with half a dozen other RVs. Signs here have always said $65 fine, towing and no overnight parking.

What's the latest here? Are people staying overnight?

Also, if not... Where else can I put a truck camper in Montreal??

I want to be able to walk to the metro just like I could from the Jean Talon Walmart.

Or... I'd like a 24 hour paid lot in Le Plateau or Mile End or something.

Anyone have any advice?

It's a truck camper so it takes up 1 1/8 parking spots. In Toronto, I just use an automated 24 hour lot and pay it. Is there a good spot in Montreal to go the same?

Thanks!

  • When we visited Montreal we stayed at the KOA South of town and drove to Montreal. We just parked and either walked or took the subway. No problems.
  • Yeah, it's sad. Those people who set up shop and camp at overnight parking spots are the worst! They ruin it for everyone.

The solution was to park in long term Via Rail parking just outside the city on the South Shore. A short train ride right into the heart of things is right outside the RV door.

$15/day, plus train tickets to/from and Metro cards.

    So, it all worked out.

This is the exact reason I went with a truck camper over anything larger. I can squeeze it into normal car parking. It's a godsend for visiting places like Montreal. :)

This more or less applies to any public place or convenience.
Eventually, enough is enough, new rules, restrictions come out.
Then people complain about all the silly rules and restrictions infringing on their right to do as they please.
  • Can't help with your specific situation, but the Walmarts east of there have almost all become no RV/camper parking, except between the hours of 23:00 and 06:00. No parking there all day any more.
We first noticed the RV parking restrictions in other areas that used to allow it, and then noticed last Fall that the Walmarts were following the trend away from becoming 24 hour free campgrounds. Over the last decade we've traveled out to the Gaspe and the Maritimes many times in summer, and it was really getting ridiculous some of what we saw going on in public places, like lawn chairs under awnings, BBQ grills, picnic tables, and even a portable propane firepit in one Walmart along the St. Lawrence. Might have been Riviere de Loup or Rimouski or Matane, can't recall exactly.
They restricted the roadside pullouts along Rte 132 a few years back when they started turning into free campgrounds, as well.
We had pretty much seen the writing on the wall years ago, for similar reasons. Funny part was, it was mostly campers driving or hauling RVs with Quebec plates that really abused the daytime/overnight parking situation. They've not only screwed themselves, but everyone else, too.
