Oh how times have changed at the border. During my high school years living in St Catharines Ontario when the legal drinking age in New York state was 18 and in Ontario 21 meant that Friday night was a trip 'over the river' for a few drinks. On the return trip the customs officer, on many occasions, would simply look in the car and say to the driver "take em home"
