I feel funny asking this, but I have never been on the road down from Lake Chelan to US 97 and will be doing it in a 40' DP towing,coming from Winthrop where I scored a site during the blues festival ...

97 is a fine road, you'll have no problems traveling it with your rig.
I don't think I've ever driven the entire old road between Vantage and Ellensburg although I have been in that area many times to visit the Wild Horses Wind Farm visitor center (a neat place to see and they have plenty of room for RV parking BTW).
I suspect the old road would be OK since there's so much heavy farming trucking in the area. The roads in the area all seem to be in good shape if not a bit narrow at times.
Of course you can always go via I90. It's a bit of a long slow grind up the hills from there but doable.
