Long but leisurely trip from NH to NM up to MT then home

Hi!

I am planning on leaving my home in NH for probably a month to do a trip I've always wanted to do. I'm sure you've heard that one before. I'm a 61 y/o woman who will be traveling with my dog, Dolly. I've been doing maps on my gps but am not sure if I should reserve a campsite or see how it goes. This time of year I don't see a problem except for campgrounds that aren't open yet. I'm not against boondocking at a Walmart. Have done that before. Any words of advice, route options, campgrounds or anything else you could suggest would be very much appreciated.

  • Thank you all. Yeah I'm pretty flexible. This will take place in April. I really want to visit Georgia O'keeffe's museum & house in Santa Fe. If the trip is too much for me, I'll just go home!
  • I'm jealous,

If you blog, send me a link
I use to call the morning before I arrive to see if they had room.
  • For that kind of trip I would not make reservations so that I did not have to be at a certain place at a certain time. But at the same time I would not expect to get into national parks, some state parks, and any other very popular park with last minute try. But if you are flexible, and sounds like you are, you can find something at least within a reasonable drive. May not always be something you would prefer, but doable.

I would only make a reservation if there was a specific place I really really wanted to stay.
  • You are probably OK this time of year w/o reservations. The only time we make them during the summer is when we want to stop at a major National Park or during holiday periods.

If we know what type of thing you want to do and see it would be easier to make recommendations.

You will probably run into bad weather and you may have a problem finding any open campgrounds in some areas. The higher altitude areas out west may still be snowed in. Bryce for example. And Montana parks.
  • Depending where you're planning to go in those areas, if you want to visit a national park, or will be somewhere over a major holiday, I strongly suggest reservations. Yes, people do find cancellations and other openings available, but unless you don't mind changing your plans and perhaps missing out on someplace you especially want to see, you should consider doing so. Sounds like a good trip, perhaps a bit rushed for a month. Safe travels!
