Looking for cheap thrills?

Try Death Valley west to east starting on 395 and go back eastbound on 136. Fairly benign for the first hour or so until you start down to Panamint Springs. We just did three weeks in the southern Rockies last month and never incurred anything half as scary as this stretch. :E.

Sheer drop off's of a thousand feet + with no shoulder and few guard rails. My bride said the views were awesome but 210% of my attention was on that very narrow road!

Once you bottom out east of Panamint Springs you get to climb back up the roughly 5,000' you just dropped. My V-10 powered 2012 24' C has power to spare but this grade pushed it to the limits. We cleared the summit at 40 mph after backing down from 45 as the trans fluid temp reached 230 degrees. Admittedly, despite a forecast high of 82 it was s little north of 100 by 1030 AM.

The drop down into the bottom of DV is a little easier if you keep it in second or third gear and you get to enjoy a little bit more of the view. The climb out to the east is a piece of cake compared to the the westbound exit of the valley. Saw a couple of large fivers headed west and wished them well.

Bottom line... Glad I did it, had not been to DV since I was 10. Would I do it again (west to east, anytime soon?), I don't think so.

  • Thanks for the tip but my trans is still full up. As long as it cools down when the load is reduced everything is working fine. Living in the desert we see a lot of 100+ days and I replaced the trans fluid with pure synthetic which certainly helps.

I can't imagine running without a Scan Gauge or similar device to monitor coolant and trans fluid temps. By keeping the trans in Tow Haul for about 90% of the trip the V-10 and Torque Shift tranny stay happy and even running near our 11,500# GVWR and towing the 960# trailer/bike combo we are getting our usual 9.5 mpg.

    Check your trans fluid level.

I did a steep grade like that and yes made it, but on that trans when it heats up it blows out a safety check valve type overflow. I lost almost all of my trans fluid. And interestingly I never saw or smelled any of it on the MH.

I thought the trans was blown until the mechanic told me about the safety overflow valve and it is supposed to do that. Filled it back up and never had another problem with it.
  • We loved the drive!

You should have waited for November and the 49ers celebration. It's a lot of fun!
  • I did 136 & 190 in May. Highest temperature was 101. I just freakin' loved that drive, I didn't come all that way to see a flat interstate. I used a F250 with a 6.7 diesel pulling a 26' (29'-1" overall) travel trailer. No issue whatsoever with power, braking or over-heating.
  • Boy that was my exact impression on Hwy 190 and I did it in a car and will never do it again, EVER. I had a car behind me, and it was sort of comforting to know that he was there to tell someone I'd gone over, but when I got to the bottom, he had disappeared and I tell you, I was thinking maybe I should go back to see if he'd gone over.
  • I've been down that road several times and never thought much about it. When I was a kid we lived in your town, Tucson. My Father would take us down to Nogales and the one thing I recall was a stretch of road like you describe, except it had wrecks scattered along the bottom of the cliffs every few hundred yards. I suspect that road is long gone now.

But on your DV road we pulled off at a scenic overlook and there was a guy with a player piano in the back of his pickup plinking away at the keyboad. I have some photos of it here somewhere.

    Yup here it is:
