Lufkin Tx to Port Aransas

We are in Lufkin tonight. Leaving for Port Aransas in the morning. Google Maps gave us 2 options. Quickest is basicly US 59 through Huston. Then west to Port A.
Other was 94 &287 ,19 with a short stint on FM 2821. An so on and on to Victoria. A very complicated route and 25 mins longer. The longer is fine but it's complicated.
Looking for some advice. It's Saturday, so Huston ??? And if Houston how to go, down the middle or around the west side?
Thanks for any help.
  • I do not recommend US 59 south from Houston. This is due to the "white knuckle" syndrome of narrow lanes with construction and heavy traffic for several miles. We went from Beaumont to Port Aransas that way last August. I came back via Texas state highway 35 to state highway (freeway) 288 and had much less stress, though it took a little longer. I would recommend looping around downtown Houston via Beltway 8/Sam Houston Parkway (tolls) or I-610 loop. You can also come straight through downtown on 59 and take 288 from there (shorter but more traffic). Just a suggestion. Safe travels to you!
  • What about 59/69 to 99 and go around the west end of Houston to I10. take I10 west to 77. 77 south to Victoria.? Thenon to Port A
  • I came down 59 through Houston and on down to Rockport 2 weeks ago and didn't have any problems. We rolled through between 1 and 2pm.
  • Be careful about beltway 8 and the other toll roads around Houston, more and more are going to EZ tag only with no cash option. parts of beltway 8 are already EZ tag only.

This is the better option! Take 35 all the way thru Rokcport/Aransas pass then 361 to the free ferry to Port-A! The ferry handles large RV's daily. We are in Rockport already for the winter! We NEVER go thru Houston! It can be dangerous in just a normal vehicle if you are not familiar with the roadways!!
  • Next time--if there is a next time.

I would recommend from Texarkana to Port Aransas (not from Lufkin):

US 59 to Marshall, then TX 43 (good road) to Henderson
US 79 to Rockdale, then US 77 to Victoria

Avoids the whole problem of Houston. Far more relaxing drive and see some better parts of Texas.

Chris3403, did you stay on 59 all the way and what about construction?

flyfishing48 well I didn't see this until now and you are probably on the way but yes we stayed on 59 all the way to Victoria and we didn't run into any construction.

You will not be able to take 99 tollway as it has no toll booths. You have to have an EZ tag or several other tags issued by various toll road authorities in the state of Texas to use the tollway unless you want to receive some large toll bills with fines in the mail!

You could use Beltway 8 toll road as they have toll booths for cash customers. Just take it all the way from 59 to I10. You will have to pay I believe several tolls which they charge by the axle.
