When we were in Canada I had a gallbladder attack and went to the clinic in Jasper. I was seen immediately, received medication and the doctor called 2x as we were traveling to see how I was doing. Fantastic service for $60 cash! We didn't buy extra insurance.
Yes this is true. We had a family member that was not yet on the provincial healthcare plan and had some medical issues. A clinic visit would cost $75, but a visit to the ER BEGAN at $800 PLUS the doctor's fee. etc etc.
As Gary says, get the medical insurance and go to the ER if it's urgent as you may not last the night waiting for the clinic to open in the morning!
