A lot like buying a puppy anywhere.
Sore subject. Humane Societies are full up with great dogs that will soon be put to sleep. Anyone can get any kind of dog they want for free. Put these irresponsible breeders out of business and stop buying dogs. Only championship show dogs are worth paying for.
I worked in construction in Colorado and one of our contracts was to build a Humane Society kennel. They had more dogs than they knew what to do with because people do not spay and neuter. One day a week they had the kill day. Do you know how they do it? You don't want to know. They put them in a sealed chamber and then vacuum the air out quickly so they suck the lungs flat. Buying dogs just keeps encouraging breeding. The only way to make them stop breeding is to stop buying what they are selling. Far too many dogs of every breed find themselves in shelters when the owners find out they weren't really prepared to be pet owners. Get a free dog. They are the best.
