We can agree to disagree. The original poster brought up the topic of buying a dog so it is not off topic.
Before Spay & Neuter and No Kill shelters there were as many as 17 million dogs put down a year by so called "shelter" and "Humane" Societies etc. I am not sure what they have cut down that number to these days but millions of dogs continue to be killed in the US to keep their numbers down.
Pet stores and whatever sell dogs that come from so called "puppy mills" where dogs are bred for money under horrible conditions. People buy dogs and keep them for awhile and find out they really weren't ready to have a dog so they take them to the local shelter or just take them down the road somewhere and abandon them.
I am in no way accusing anyone on this forum of doing anything like that and I assume all on this forum would be good parents to any dog. But we all know there are rescue dogs that overfill shelters all over the country and many of them are going to be killed because of the overfull conditions. Getting a free dog from a shelter may not stop the "puppy mills" but it could help - one small step at a time.
Here is a link to an amazing no kill shelter in Utah between the Grand Canyon and Zion - Kanab, Utah - where they have thousands of acres and thousands of animals - 30,000 people per year visit this huge shelter - and many volunteer to help out. What a great place to vacation - see two or three or more of the best National Parks and spend some time volunteering at an amazing place full of wonderful animals A pet lovers paradise. It is called Angel Canyon. Lots to learn on this website.
