Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, ID

We will be transiting from Red Rock RV Camping Park near Henry's Lake in Idaho to Craters of the Moon NM and are thinking of including the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway in the day's travels with a stop at the falls. I'm 37' plus a toad. Looking at aerial photos, it looks like no problem for the RV on the byway. Any reason that would not be the case? Also, is there adequate RV parking at the falls? Thanks.

  • The view at Upper Mesa Falls is well worth the drive. But I would just take toad down to the parking area....road is pretty narrow. I think there is a spot at the turn off into Upper you could leave MH.
  • We have been there several times with the last two weeks ago. Parking is tight at best even with our dually. Unhook your toad at the intersection of US 20 after turning toward the falls. There is a pull-off area there that fishermen use. Then return, hook back up and continue on down US 20.
  • Not sure I'd say there's "good" parking for a large RV at the falls, though the road itself is fine. Mountain driving, but nothing extreme. We do see RVs there periodically but it's a ****shoot as to whether there will be room in the parking lot when you get there. JMHO.

Big Springs gets a bit less traffic than the falls, so you have a bit better chance there. Worth the gravel road to get there; the amount of water coming from the springs is amazing!
  • We visited Mesa Falls a few years back. There's actually an upper and lower falls. Good parking at both. If you have Google Earth, you can see the parking lots.

We also made a stop at Big Springs, one of the largest springs in the country. Crystal clear water and big trout. Decent parking there too.
