Like MexicoWanderer, I'm in to debunking myths, so I too am always searching for PROOF.
At this time there is NO proof that any sensor on any diesel vehicle can directly detect whether LSD or ULSD has been used by the engine.
There are INDIRECT messages via codes such as P20EE and P2BAD (P2BAD always gives me a chuckle)that MIGHT be triggered if LSD is used instead of ULSD, but those codes can be triggered by a host of other temporary situations, so their presence does not make a technician think that LSD was used. All of the Big Three faults tracking procedures look for more obvious causes related to components of the emissions system.
If there are ACTUAL CASES of owners being challenged by technicians over these codes, I want to hear about them, because I want my knowledge base on this subject to be reliable and accurate.
