As for the codes being retained in the computer, here's a real-world example of what happens:
While traveling in the USA, using ULSD fuel, my 2013 Duramax showed the notorious "bad DEF" message, as well as the "Check Engine" light. This came about after I left it idling for a long period of time to warm it up after a fairly hard overnight frost. I hooked up my 5th and drove about 50kms down the road and the messages went away. When I reached a place with a GM dealership, I took the vehicle in for an oil change and mentioned to the gal who was booking in the vehicles that I had experienced these messages and wanted them cleared from the computer memory. She replied `no problem` and proceeded to hook up a Tech II to clear everything....NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
