Roads all over MX have been improving dramatically in recent years so there are lots of free roads that are now fine to drive. But you have to know where and when to take the toll or free road. Some toll roads are almost unavoidable and then there are areas with lots of good free roads and no toll roads. Plan your route and then ask here. There will always be varying opinions. The toll calculator linked above can be very useful but not exact at all times. New roads and new tolls are being built as we speak. We have seen vast improvement in many old narrow roads in recent years - now wide with new pavement. There are also more and more "perifericos" which are ring or loop roads around cities and towns so you can find a place to park outside town and take your towed or a taxi or bus into town - public transportation in MX is great. I am not saying to avoid towns but going through some towns with at large RV can be very difficult so seeing the sights can be better done in a car. Do not miss too many small towns and do not be afraid if your Spanish language skills are limited - the people are great and will help you if they can.
