As a very coarse guideline, I factor the cost of things in Mexico to be 800% higher with relationship to income earnings versus cost of merchandise and services in the USA. While the income of the middle class keeps increasing dollar wise, for the lower 50% who work for 200 - 300 pesos per day, a day's wage does not purchase a gas tank of Magna. A day's wage does not pay for los tramos de cuotas one way on Mex 15-D between Villa Union and Tepic.
Slow transport is expensive transport. A 22-wheeler that isn't in gears 11-13 uses a lot more almost four dollar a gallon fuel. Ticket prices on servicios de camiones have skyrocketed. It costs me A HUNDRED DOLLARS EACH WAY to travel the upper 50% of the Baja California peninsula now. Guerrero Negro to Tijuana. This is due to the cost of fuel. Factor in White Star, TNS, and a few dozen other carriers have to pay TOLLS as well as outrageous fuel prices and you have an economy in chaos. It may not be prohibitively expensive to gringos, but for la gente it is absurd.
I have a ridiculous dream. In that dream platoons of Swiss and German forensic accountants descend on Mexico City and attach themselves to two buildings, skyscrapers. The First is SHCP/SAT, the other Petroleos Mexicanos. They tear the records to shreds. Every centavo is audited. Results are released to la gente. The dream ends with the sound of volleys from firing squads.
