Mi. To San Diego and back

I need to be in San Diego Oct 27-30 for a conference. I have decided to take about 3 1/2 weeks and drive out and back. I do not want to be on I-70 or too much mountains that time of year and I have been that route many times.
So to see something new I will take a more southern route. Dropping down on 44 then 40 through Oklahoma city, Tulsa, Amarillo, Albuquerque. Kingman and maybe a little out of the way detour through Vegas. Then down to San Diego. Returning a little farther south across 8 then 10 and 20, 30 back to 40 and north through Memphis. I have never been this route in the MH so looking forward to suggestions about this route and things to do and see along the way. Maybe leave about 10/15 so I will have a 11 days to get there and about the same to get back.
  • Have taken both routes from/to MI many times. The post about the winds is something you need to build time for in case you have to wait out the storm. We take 5-7 days to get to Phoenix to give you an idea. To San Diego is another days drive. I don't know where you are in MI but we like traveling I69 to 70 then 57 to 55 to I40. It is usually a nice peaceful route. I sent you a private message of campgrounds we like on your southern route.
  • Anyone traveling out West in October needs to be aware of the Santa Ana winds. When a high pressure area builds up over the Four Corners area (Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona) some pretty vicious wind condition can develop. They concentrate in Southern California but high winds can be expected anywhere in the region.

Freeways are often times closed - usually after a few 18 wheelers are blown over. So keep an eye on weather conditions and build into your travel schedule an extra day or two.

If you do the Las Vegas side trip you will pretty much be committed to continuing west on I-15. Nothing impressive about that route but if by chance you decide to skip Las Vegas then consider doing a side trip south down into Lake Havasu City on Arizona route 95. It's a nice place to check out and with some pretty good boondocking all through there. And the drive down the river for a ways past Lake Havasu to I-10 at Blythe is pretty nice most of the way too.

Over past Palm Springs, then, you'd want to take route 60 at Beaumont over to the I-215 and on south down to San Diego.

For a real nice stop 30 miles east of Flagstaff check out the Meteor Crater at exit 233 on I-40. They also have a quiet little campground there.

Half the fun is in the planning, they say. Good Traveling.

    edit: links check?
  • Good route plus the advantage of seeing new sights.

There are some good climbs on both routes but doable in a MH.
