Michigan to Mt Rushmore, South Dakota
Is it better to take I90 to South Dakota from Michigan or to go I80 across then head north at Omaha? Not sure what the drive around Chicago will be like and if it would be better to stay farther sout...

There is no time, day or night, that is a good time going through Chicago (some times are just worse by a factor of 10 or more). You either spend the time sitting still in traffic (yes, even in the middle of the night) or you spend the time going around Chicago. Your choice.
