Michigan to Mustang Island

Heading to Mustang Island early December. Looking for a good route. Want to avoid Dallas and Austin. Last year we got some very good advice from this forum, but last year we stopped in San Antonio. This year we are going straight to Mustang Island.
Last year we took US 59, Tx155, US 79 to I35.
Given we are heading straight to Mustang Island any recommendations.? Pulling a 5er just under 13ft high.

    We just made the trip and entered TX at Texarkana - took 30 west to 19 south and across to Waco on 31/ Got on 77. Took 77 to Victoria, then cut over to the coast. Bypassed both Dallas and Houston.

    Yes, indeed. Here is my suggestion. Follow the above route until the intersection of US 79 with US 77 near Rockdale (not Rockport), Texas. US 77 will take you very directly almost all the way to Mustang Island.

    US 77 is the route we follow on our trips down to the RGV (The Valley). Either all the way or to pick up US 59 again and then US 281 to the Valley
