SO . . . if you want a good place to meet, your SIL could take I-10 and then I-20 to bring him all the way over into the Longview, Tyler, Marshall area. Lots of good campgrounds including Tyler State Park, Caddo State Park, COE parks on Lake 'o The Pines as well as commercial campgrounds.

No guarantee that there will be no freeze or winter weather, that can happen as it did all the way down toward San Antonio as mentioned above. Still, I grew up here and my memories of Christmas Day are mostly of playing out in the sunshine in "shirtsleeve temperature."

I'd recommend that you head directly south to I-10 and meet in Gulf Shores, Alabama (it's not half-way, probably) or south Texas below San Antonio. Rockport would be nice. Definitely not New Mexico - it's cold in winter. Louisiana can be cold, damp and rainy.

This is a major trip for such a short time in a very busy season. I think that I would rather fly into some place and stay in a motel in a touristy area. You'd have a lot more 'quality' time for visiting rather than long drives and iffy weather. However, get a move on whatever you do.... you need to make reservations for this kind of trip! Good luck!
