No one uses the minimum wage in Mexico, no one pays or abides by it, other than some maquiladoras and they have a different pay scale.
Most persons are paid by the day, weekly or 15 days, (pago diario, pago semanal, quinsena), Mexicans do not tip or tip very bad, that is why they like us gringos, we tip and that is good for us and good for them, I have always tipped 15% to 20% and have always gotten very good service, if the service is not up to par then they get 10%, needless to say I do not return to that establishment and I let them know.
A little bit of money for a small tip in relation to the food or service received is not going to hurt your wallet.
Some years ago we had dinner in Puebla, with my brother in law and his family six persons we had appetizers, main course, dessert and we all had two beers, at that time the bill with the tip came to $185.00 U.S. DOLLARS, nowhere in Canada or the U.S.A. could we have had good food excellent service and a couple of hours having a great time.
That same meal would have cost us well over $600.00 U.S. DOLLARS in the U.S.
Enjoy the country, the people, the food the good beer and give them a gratuity, it is not going to bankrupt you, and yes a small tip for us goes a long way in Mexico.
