Once we took the 405 by LAX by mistake :o and it took 3 hours to go 21 miles. I think I'd drive to New York if it meant I'd avoid that mess.:R
I drive the 405 every day from Santa Clarita, 37 miles south to LAX and my office window overlooks the 405, so I consider myself an expert :( , and today will make an 80 mile run to OC. At this point in time, the construction is simply no longer a factor.
Regardless of anyone else's comments here, my flat statement is that if you make the run after 11AM, you will miss the rush traffic. 3 hours is the rare rare exception, by no means the rule. And if there are two in the car, there is an HOV lane 90% of the way across LA and Orange County.
Up to you, its just a car..
Adding a PS to this.. The 5 south of Oceaside can be a nightmare. BUT I have also spent hours stopped on the 15 in the same area. Since a average speed on the 15 seems to run around 80-90MPH (really), the accidents in the area are often plentiful, and there are no easy alternates on either road.
