I took the 231 route down to I-10 just last October and also in 2016. I liked it. It's most all good 4-lane highway. You do go thru a few towns but I don't remember many stop lights.
There is one little trick I use to avoid some of the Montgomery traffic. Coming down I-65 at Montgomery, I take I-85 east past the 231 south exit and go over to the Hwy 271 exit (south). This connects with 231 after about 5 miles. Still, there are some traffic lights on this stretch.
I forget where I got that tip but I believe it was in this forum.
