One of the many reasons I do not use a planning program or gps for long range trips.
These programs are not for everyone and I don't normally use them for long range trips, just segments of the trip.
What I like about S&T.
1. It's PC based so I don't need internet access.
2. It gave me a good and easy way to get an estimate of mileage for the long Alaskan trip.
3. I updated it for our actual stops along the way and so it has become a record of our stops.
4. It was very useful for fuel planning. Enter a new route starting at the last fill up and a future destination. More that 400 miles and I better fill up again before the destination.
I don't use it for navigation and didn't care for the large bulky easy to damage laptop on my dash. And it's navigation is nowhere near as good as Garmin.
I do like my Garmin for short distance navigation. While I do have over 100 AAA maps that I've collected my Garmin has virtually every town in detail and road in the US and Canada. I just can't get or carry that amount of paper. At one time I felt like you about a GPS as I traveled the familiar routes. But today I get quick, easy information about unfamiliar areas. And my Garmin did not give me any of the unwanted routing that M&S provided. But both need to used with intelligence or you might go for a swim in your rig. :B
