We can sure feel your pain. For us, the worst of the reaction lasted a couple of weeks, at least before we were able to say we had a good nights sleep, though to tell the truth, we're still not completely back to normal.
For travellers: If we were in Zihuatanejo heading home, would likely go up via Parzcuaro rather than the coast road that we took three weeks ago, and stick to the major highways and toll roads where ever possible. The interior seems to be better patrolled than the Mex 200 coast highway. It took us hours to find someone to report the Jeep to.
