My Way to Alaska

North To Alaska

I am approaching my trip to Alaska probably much differently than many of those that go.

Since I have lived there, worked there, not only in the Air Force but after-wards doing the “Deadliest Catch” job of working on a Crab boat...I was 21 at the time, and then later working on the North Slope on an oil Rig in the Beaufort Sea off of Deadhorse and since working in Alaska and traveling there I dont see it as quite the same exciting Adventure-trip as some will.

My first drive up the Alaska Highway was in 1973, November. I arrived at Elmendorf AFB just in time for Thanksgiving Dinner at the Chow Hall.

The road has been upgraded so much since those days and in fact so have most of the roads within Alaska. When I was there in the Air Force the George Parks Highway (the Anchorage to Fairbanks road) didn't exist as such but the road was gravel/dirt much of the way and under construction. It would take us 10 or more hours to get to Fairbanks, 5 of us packed into a VW Beetle...just to go for the weekend.

In those days there was a street of bars in Fairbanks and the bars were all connected together in the back so you could leave your coat in one and still bar hop. On one trip the temp hit -50. It's important to stay sober enough to remember which bar you left your coat in.

So I wont be doing anything special to my Truck or trailer. I wont be taking any extra parts. My truck is almost new, and both have survived the rigors of the Baja and it's many miles of rough rocky dirt roads.

I will be taking the 2015 Milepost which is really all you need. I am not worried about gas or places to stay along the way there are plenty of both. I am not worried about driving the road...I have driven much much worse.

I am looking forward to the stretches of beautiful wilderness, the animals you always see, the drive in itself, the towns I have known before: Anchorage, Homer, Seward, Fairbanks, Dawson Creek, Beaver Creek, Valdez and many others. I will be looking forward to that peculiar quality of light that only Alaska has, The smell of the sea at Seward and the taste of Clams at Homer.

Speaking of taste there are the cinnamon buns at that little cafe/bakery at Alyeska. I hope it's still there since I visited in 2000. And then one of the best things of all... the Crab Louie at the top of the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage...it's the best I’ve ever had. And what would a visit to Fairbanks be without a trip to Pioneer Park and the Steak and Salmon bake?

But there is an intangible quality to Alaska that no other state has. Its a feeling, a way of life, a spirit of adventure and although it is much more urban, modern and populated than it was, it retains something unique that every one should experience.

So if you are even thinking of going but you think you need to be in a caravan...No you don't. You can easily do it by yourself. If you think you need tons pf preparation, extra parts, more spares...well the greatest likely hood is it will all be for nought. But take them if you must but GO.

I am now in Far northern California on my way north and I expect to arrive in Alaska about the end of May or first week of June. I have reservations for a campsite at Teklanika CG in Denali National Park for June 30th...hope to see you there.
