4x4 Dodger, the OP has just described exactly what we did on our trip last year to Alaska, just 15000 miles.
We carried a spare belt for the RV and no other spare parts.
We had all sorts of bug/mosquito repellent but never had to use it.
We loved the people we met and loved the beauty of the state they live in.
We took sever flight seeing trips, several rafting trips and were simply amazed by the beauty.
It's not rocket science, KISS, keep it simple. We made some reservations far in advance, and others as we saw where and when we headed that way.
We took our time, drove under existing conditions, witch sometimes ment 5-10 mph especially on the top-of-the-world highway/road.
Go, enjoy, meet new people, see the beauty of Alaska and the Yukon, eat, fish, take pictures.
And, and don't complain about the roads, bugs, lack of amenities,ENJOY the allure, beauty and wildness of a very special place and very special people.
