Being an Alaska native (notice the small "n"), living there the better part of my life, and having taken several (20+ trips on the Alcan beginning around the same era ' 76, although none for several years), I'd offer the following:
- Agree with the KISS idea and with the idea of not complaining about bugs, roads, no amenities. If a standard RV park with mountain views is what one wants, go to Colorado....and as wonderful as CO and ID are, they ain't AK or the North (IMNSHO)
- The road isn't as tough as it once was....hasn't been that bad since at least my last trip which was 10 years or so ago.
- In those 20+ trips, I never had a broken headlamp except for the 1 time I didn't have a spare...so in a nod to karmic conditions, I'd recommend taking a spare headlight/lamp
- In all seriousness, while the road is greatly improved and there are services all along the road, the wait for parts, service, etc can be significant and carrying a few spare parts might be worth it if one can do the change themselves (belts and a mounted spare tire come to mind)
-Don't blast through Canada....that trip (all parts of it except possibly some of the endless wheat fields on some of the routes) is almost as scenic as Alaska. :)
-Save your $$ however possible and spend it on flightseeing trips
-Was just in Homer/Seward (as well as Anchorage) a couple of weeks ago, pretty spectacular views/scenery; nothing but admiration for the guys going out on the salt for the winter king fishery
- There is a lure of the North that still echos in Alaska....
