Myrtle Beach to Grand Canyon and back

In the very early stages of planning an 8-10 week trip from Myrtle Beach, SC to the Grand Canyon and back in 2015. It will be DH and I in our 32' MH with toad. Have never taken our RV farther west than the Appalachians, and would appreciate the expertise of those who have traveled more extensively. We'd like to not rush or overplan our trip, but would like some suggestions on several points:
1 - when is the best time to make this trip. We are very flexible as to when we go. Obviously don't want to hit a time when bad weather is the norm.
2 - Is there a 'best route' to take. I'm a retired History teacher and am very much into historical sites, but we also love to get a feel for the local atmosphere whenever we travel.
3- Is interstate travel a must? We're not opposed to it, but would like to 'slow down' at times as well.
4 - Any 'pitfalls' we should avoid that would make travel more difficult. No one wants to make a mistake and 'go the wrong way' when it could be avoided!
Thanks for your suggestions and for sharing your experiences.
