I agree with the I95 to J-ville then I10 to 301 south to 326 to I75, to be the best way to avoid the I4 crap...but I don't agree with calling the small towns on 301 "speed traps" I drove a tractor/trailer for many years out of J-ville down 301 & never had any trouble with the small towns on 301...the secret is to obey the law...
I'll give you an Amen on obeying speed limits. While I've never received a speeding ticket, I have driven very fast. I'm ex LEO... from a near-by large town and personally knew (then) Waldo Willie. While I strongly disagree with the practice, I stand behind my knowledge of the issue and the moniker was well deserved.
Newspaper reports have long conveyed the fact that traffic ticket revenue has accounted for a significant portion of Waldo's city budget... as much as a third. One year, it was noted that police officers in the little rural town of Lawtey averaged 25 tickets a day. ABC News has even addressed the issue. AAA purchased billboards and placed them about 4 miles from both Lawtey and Waldo. And apparently, State DOT was observing as well. The speed limit on 301 used to drop from 65 mph to 35 mph at Waldo City limits with no warning. Today DOT signs display decreases down to 45 mph and 35 mph through Waldo. Hwy 24 that cuts off Hwy 301 towards Gainesville is a 35 mph zone that is heavily worked as well.
I believe drivers should obey speed laws. While at the same time, I believe signage should be posted to insure that a reasonable and prudent licensed driver can proceed safely in compliance to those laws.
