myrtle beach to tampa

Planning a trip from MB to Tampa this Thanksgiving. Don't mind using I95, but would really like to avoid I 4 in Florida. Any suggestions on an alternate route? Also would like an overnight on the way (have to leave after 6PM on a Friday before Thanksgiving). Any ideas on CG or WalMart/rest stop overnight stay along the way? Thanks.

  • If its the Orlando traffic you don't like, another route would be I95 to I4 to FL44 (Deland) or FL46 (Sanford) thru Leesburg over to I75
  • I agree with the 301 routing. Just be advised that I-4 is not a bad highway from Orlando to Tampa. All the construction is completed 3 lanes all the way and not a bad drive - once you get thru Orlando.
  • 301 is shorter distance but fair amount of stop and go. I10 to I75 is a little longer miles but a little faster time wise. As a long time Tampa resident I have used both frequently. With my MH I tend to prefer I10. Both get you there about the same time but with the MH I prefer to avoid the small towns, set the cruise at 65 and relax in the right lane. Not a single stop light until Tampa.
  • I never heard of "Waldo Willie"...but I did hear a lot about "The Silver Bullet" over the "CB" happy to say I never got to meet him.

I'll give you an Amen on obeying speed limits. While I've never received a speeding ticket, I have driven very fast. I'm ex LEO... from a near-by large town and personally knew (then) Waldo Willie. While I strongly disagree with the practice, I stand behind my knowledge of the issue and the moniker was well deserved.

Newspaper reports have long conveyed the fact that traffic ticket revenue has accounted for a significant portion of Waldo's city budget... as much as a third. One year, it was noted that police officers in the little rural town of Lawtey averaged 25 tickets a day. ABC News has even addressed the issue. AAA purchased billboards and placed them about 4 miles from both Lawtey and Waldo. And apparently, State DOT was observing as well. The speed limit on 301 used to drop from 65 mph to 35 mph at Waldo City limits with no warning. Today DOT signs display decreases down to 45 mph and 35 mph through Waldo. Hwy 24 that cuts off Hwy 301 towards Gainesville is a 35 mph zone that is heavily worked as well.

I believe drivers should obey speed laws. While at the same time, I believe signage should be posted to insure that a reasonable and prudent licensed driver can proceed safely in compliance to those laws.

  • Don't know how late you want to drive. From Myrtle, 3 hrs to New Green Acres RV Park, in Walterboro, SC is popular with snowbirds, big drive-thru sites, easy on and off I-95. About 5 hours will put you near Brunswick, Ga and IIRC, there's a Flying J in the vicinity. In Jacksonville, take I-10 West to US 301 South. 301 is 4 lane and passes through a few towns, but mostly open road and light traffic. Two particular issues with speed on US 301... Lawtey, Fl with a school zone Mon-Fri and south of Starke, Fl lies the City of Waldo, long known as a speed trap. The road is very clearly marked today, but speeds drop quickly. "Waldo Willie" has lurked there since the 70s. Just north of Ocala, I'd turn off onto Hwy 326 and head a couple of miles over to I-75 and south to Tampa.
  • You can go 95 into Florida . take the bypass (295) to I-10 . . Take I-10 west to 301 south.. take that to 75 south...watch your speeds on 301 ALL the little towns have cops just for us tourists on the side of the road where it goes from 55 down to 35......
