The weather can be unpredictable in October, we've had snow here in Albuquerque during the Balloon Fiesta,and up to the northwest of here aka Moab, so I would suggest the northern route earlier then back south. Have a great time at the Balloon Fiesta it is an awesome experience no matter how many times you see it!
