We run out to Colorado most summers, so go the same basic route as far as to Amarillo, Texas. I like the general route spelled out above by sdianel except I stay on Interstate 20 going through Dallas. it stays far enough south of the main parts of town, that I have never had any real traffic problems there. We often try to time our overnights on one side or the other of Dallas. West bound we try to stay at the Blue Bonnet RV in Terrell Texas and this go through Dallas at mid morning. East bound coming home to Florida, we normally stay at the Amarillo RV Ranch Campground and this puts us going through Ft Worth and Dallas in mid afternoon. Sometimes spending the night after Dallas in Baton Rouge (KOA)or Breaux Bridge at Poche's Fish Camp and RV park.
West bound, we stay on I 20 till we get to Ft Worth, then cut NW on Hwy 287 which is a nice 4 lane highway to Amarillo, then we cut on up to Dalhart and to Raton NM and go north into Colorado. Once you get to I 40 at Amarillo, just stay on I 40 west bound to Albuquerque NM. In the summer time we find this southern route helps keep us out of tornado alley, most of the trips.
