Newburgh to Lancaster

We are going from Newburgh NY to Lancaster PA. We are looking for advice on a route. Considering I84 to US 209 then to Allentown and US 222. The alternate route is I87 south to 287 then I78 to Allentown the US 222.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
  • I use I84, 209, 33, I78, 100, 222.

209 is slow, nice with a few rough spots, but will get you there just as quick using less fuel. No commercial vehicles allowed.

33 is mostly 4 lane and saves time.

Use the 100 exit to get away from the 222 business route.

Some of 222 is slow during rush hours. Mix of 2, 3 and 4 lanes.
  • We also use I-84 to Rt. 209. Rt. 209 takes you through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area - it is a pretty drive however it is only 2 lane road, it that matters. Also be aware there is bridge reconstruction on I-84 westbound. We were eastbound about two weeks ago and traffic going west was backed up pretty good. Allow extra time there.

I'm going to suggest, if you've not already considered, that you continue on 209 south to Rt. 33 (and yes, you're on I-80 for a bit at Stroudsburg). Rt. 33 eventually terminates at I-78, then take I-78 west to Rt. 222/Hamilton Blvd. The stretch from the I-78 interchange to Breinigsville is 4 lane but there is a series of traffic lights so take your time. Rt. 222 is then 2 lanes until you get to the east side of Reading; once you're on the Reading bypass you will make good time. Enjoy & safe travels.
