It depends on when and where you'll be somewhere. Popular destinations and/or popular times (like holiday weekends) make reservations much more necessary than mid-week, middle of nowhere camping. Likewise, if you're flexible on what sort of a site you can take, that helps a lot too; it's harder to find a 60' pull-through with full hookups than it is to find "a site" that may or may not have electric, water, sewer, etc.
It's not pertinent to your question, but I'd kind of point out that Mt Rushmore is not precisely along the way between New Jersey and the Grand Canyon.... :B
