In my SAR days, I'd get poison oak about once a year. I was told once by an ER doc that "you can get the shots, and it'll go away in about 12-14 days, or do nothing and it'll go away in about 2 weeks." I resorted to showers as hot as I could stand - the "burn" sensation overrides the "itch" sensation, and at least you can get some sleep.
This q-tip remedy is along the same lines, and like the OP said - it's almost free!
