North CAlifornia coast

Hey out there--I'm interested in a route from I-5 North of Sacramento (roughly) over to the coast some where South of Crescent City. We're towing a TT. We've been Hwy 20 to Ft. Bragg, but are asking if another way would be O.K. Some of the routes look a little dicey.
Thanks.......

Be careful about using 299 during this time of year. Check Caltrans live cameras before you go.

Hwy. 299 has curves and some hills. The roads can be closed in the winters due to mud slides and rocks on Hwy. Watch your speeds, drive with caution. I prefer Hwy 20 because it is more RV friendly. 299 is not my 1st choice
  • California Hwy. 1 north of Westport (which is north of Ft. Bragg) is not recommended for RVs. That leaves CA 20 as the most reasonable direct route to US 101 and north.
  • Simplest route would be 299 out of Redding to Mckinleyville and then 101 north to Crescent City. The road is fine for RV travel, just depends on the time of the year. Another route would be go up to Grants Pass, Or, then take 199 west. This does take you back into California in sort of a round about way. 299 is the most direct route for you, though.
