What part of the lake are you going to, South Shore or North? The reason I ask is if you take 95 all the way to I-80 in to Reno as some suggested, you will still be a long way from South Shore. Your best bet will be to stay on 395, which is not a bad drive at all, to Carson city and follow 50 west to South Shore.
We have driven 395 with our truck and travel trailer and never once felt like it was too steep of a climb on any of the summits. Enjoy the scenery of the eastern Sierra, it's well worth it.
