What part of the lake are you going to, South Shore or North? The reason I ask is if you take 95 all the way to I-80 in to Reno as some suggested, you will still be a long way from South Shore. Your best bet will be to stay on 395, which is not a bad drive at all, to Carson city and follow 50 west to South Shore.
We have driven 395 with our truck and travel trailer and never once felt like it was too steep of a climb on any of the summits. Enjoy the scenery of the eastern Sierra, it's well worth it.
We will be targeting the south shore area at state line as the Nevada side of the street is more fun. :B Carson City and 50 up the hill is currently Plan A. Our 24' C has the 6.8L V-10 and eats mountains for breakfast, fortunately it came with the 55 gallon tank so we will have some options when it comes to feeding the beast. After one night in South Lake (damage control), we will follow the lake clockwise around and then head off to Nevada City which will be an easy and scenic drive, thanks again for the info.

Before you get to 50 in Carson City you will see Silver City RV park that has a gas station and will be on your side of the divided highway. There is also a Costco just before the 50 turnoff which will be on the other side of the highway but has a turn lane and stoplight to get over to that side. Fill up at one of those stations as fuel is much cheaper there than up at the lake. They really rip us off up here in the Tahoe/Truckee area on fuel.
Have fun, we have been having a great summer weather wise here in the Northern Sierra.
