north thru N.J. Turnpike/ GSP/thru-way...are they the same

Ditto this. I came over the TZ and took the GSP all the way to the Tpke, paying close attention to the clearance signs. I didn't see anything less than 13.5, and as mentioned, that was in the far right lane. Clearance wise, you shouldn't have a problem. Traffic wise is another story.

On word of caution DO NOT get on any PARKWAYS in New York. They were built for auto traffic and have numerous low clearances.

Merge left onto RT 87 North

Take exit#17 . that is for interstate 84... going EASTwill take you to Newburgh , which is directly BEFORE the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge

As already mentioned, some the bridges on the Garden State Parkway north of the intersection with the NJ Turnpike are arched but will be OK as long as you stay out of the far right lane. That said, I suggest that you get off the NJ Turnpike at exit 10 and take I287 to avoid the narrow toll booths (and tolls) on the Parkway. You will then join the NY Turnpike near Suffern NY and continue north to Newburgh. No need to cross the Tappan Zee Bridge, as Newburgh is on the west side of the Hudson River.
