We have gone to Acadia every Fall for the last 5 years or so and have never needed reservations. We stop in Old Orchard Beach on the way up and Wells on the way home. One campground told us the only time we would NEED reservations was Columbus Day weekend which is the end of the season for most campgrounds in Maine.

Sorry I can't help with the height thing.

I'm in Charleston, SC and drive right under I95 on my way to I77-I81 when I go north. Just too much traffic on I95 for my tastes. If you didn't have something to do in GA, work your way up to Birmingham, Knoxville and pick up I81 in TN.

Most New England CGs close on Columbus Day if not earlier. Be sure to check ahead.

You are going to need to get on some very small backroads before there is any real reason to worry about height. If semis are on the road, you are safe. If any doubt about an arched bridge, drive the center of it. The min height shown is usually at the curb.

I live in North East and agree that if you have a choice take I81 up. 95 is just horrible on a good day. I95 in Maine I believ would be fine having driving it many times the size of the truckers going up there are huge. Google I95 there are books and websites that provide all the information.

We Camped at Bar Harbor Oceanfront KOA and had a great time. We had a waterfront site. They have a guy that cooks lobsters every night and you just walk up and pay. Something really cool is that they have a free bus that circles the island. All you need to do is walk up the office and wait for it. This will take you everywhere. On the way into Mt Desert Island which is Bar Harbor on the right side of the causeway is Trents Lobster Pound. We devoured the sweetest most tender 2.5 lb lobster that we ever had. Acadia we took our bikes and biked the park, drove some and had lunch up at the lake house. Amazing country!

Agree with others, 1) get an exact height, 2) avoid I-95 as much as possible. If you come in to PA via Rt. 15 through Gettysburg I would stay on 15 then pick up Rt. 581 to get to I-83 north then to I-81 north (although there may be construction above the I-81-I-78 split) and from there get to I-84 (the construction on I-84 bridges just above Milford PA is finished).

Rt. 209 through the Delaware Water Gap is a nice drive if you're not in a hurry, however to get there you'd have to take Rt. 22 east through Allentown & Bethlehem OR I-78 to Rt. 33 north to Rt. 209 north. Rt. 22 is more direct but will have heavy traffic all day and it slows to a crawl at rush hour. I-78 is better but has heavy truck traffic and has seen more than it's fair share of accidents the past few months.

Another vote for getting on 81 (for us usually just north of Richmond ) to 84, 290, to 95.
Stay on 95 until you get to Augusta, Me then take 3 east to the coast will avoid a lot of traffic
and is a nice drive.
Schoodic Point just north of Acadia is a new campground and is first class.
They run shuttles to the park.
