OK but we often take 101, 85, 280 and then 19th ave through SF midday and we're 42' plus toad. Just stay in the middle lane on 19th Ave.
With the presumption you are leaving from SLO using 101, take it up to a place where you can circumvent SF unless you're okay with staying on 101 & taking it thru downtown SF & over the Golden Gate. I did it in our previous 32'er towing a Jeep. Would not in our current bigger rig.
And as a gift from the Bridge District north bound is free!
But I understand the reluctance to drive the 6 miles of 19th Ave but 101 through SF is not my cup of tea. - bbaker2001Explorer2Gypsies.
I mean we don't stop in Ca if we don't have to.
some of our family stayed at wrights Beach last year. cost was 50 a nite with no services. did enjoy it, but headed right to Oregon.
state campground with hookups. 25-30 a nite and much nicer.
we now head right up I5 and 101 to Oregon. - aerbus32Explorer IIWith the presumption you are leaving from SLO using 101, take it up to a place where you can circumvent SF unless you're okay with staying on 101 & taking it thru downtown SF & over the Golden Gate. If you hail from SLO, you've probably driven 1 north of Ragged Pt. 1 just north of SF & near Leggett are at least that bad. You'll see RV'ers on it. You'll see cyclists. Absolutely not a safe combination. We use 101 to move the 37'er from park to park to access 1 by toad. Look into Shoreline RV in CC. We loved it last fall.
- pauljExplorer IIThey'll just get on I5. You don't see anything from the freeway - or so the 'I don't use freeways' people say.
Plus you have to take US101 North to South, otherwise using the ocean-view turnoffs is impossible. - 2gypsies1Explorer III

O.K....you gotta tell us if you live in CA, how you skip CA and go right to Oregon? :) - bbaker2001ExplorerWe usually skip CA and go right to Oregon, but we have done these
Might want to look at Patrick’s Point
Trees of Mystery
Jedeiah Smith campground. Not far from Crescent City
Hope you spend a lot of time on Oregon Coast. We have booked 2 ½ months on coast.
We think the Oregon coast is nicer than Ca, and the state campgrounds do have hookups. - CA_TravelerExplorer III

We took our 36' MH and toad on SR 1 several times. Near Leggett there are 15MPH switch backs and otherwise it's not to bad. MH's over 40' are prohibited on most of SR 1.
I'm sure you're aware of the differences in Hwy 1 and Hwy 101. Hwy 1 ends at Leggett. It's a beautiful drive but not in a RV. 101 is also very nice north of San Francisco. - jfkmkExplorer II

X10,000! Travelled San Francisco to Monterey on Friday evening and it took four hours! I have no idea how Californians put up with that kind of traffic, and I'm from NJ! To put in perspective, it took 90 minutes on the return trip to San Francisco the same evening. - 2gypsies1Explorer IIII'm sure you're aware of the differences in Hwy 1 and Hwy 101. - korbeExplorerI would take 101 the entire route, and try to avoid the bay area during high traffic times. Great route, IMHO .
