Get south by the quickest route then travel west!
I left NY in December. I absolutley did not want to get caught in snow or ice, with a camper in tow and all my loved ones on board.
I watch the weather and saw ice and snow on it's way so we left early. I found an app "Weather on the Road" that would let me plan a route and then it would plot the weather, at the time I would be passing, all along that route.
I also had to realize that I would be only able to travel so far per day. I had to try an anticipate where I would be stopping for the night and what the weather was going to be in that location the next morning when I headed out on the road again.
I found a time that was good for my first day, but when we were to start out the next morning, there was to be an ice storm. So back to the drawing board.
My point is, trying to dodge dangerous weather this time of year is very difficult. It is best to avoid the mountains and the areas proned to the dangerous weather.
Head south by the safest and quickest route then sit back and ENJOY the rest of your trip.
