NY to Arizona

Hello folks, the family and I are headed out to AZ in February and our usual route out that way is 78 through PA to 81S to TN then across 40. We are to traveling this route during the summer and spring, anyone have experience during the winter with this route?
  • Get south by the quickest route then travel west!

I left NY in December. I absolutley did not want to get caught in snow or ice, with a camper in tow and all my loved ones on board.

I watch the weather and saw ice and snow on it's way so we left early. I found an app "Weather on the Road" that would let me plan a route and then it would plot the weather, at the time I would be passing, all along that route.

I also had to realize that I would be only able to travel so far per day. I had to try an anticipate where I would be stopping for the night and what the weather was going to be in that location the next morning when I headed out on the road again.

I found a time that was good for my first day, but when we were to start out the next morning, there was to be an ice storm. So back to the drawing board.

My point is, trying to dodge dangerous weather this time of year is very difficult. It is best to avoid the mountains and the areas proned to the dangerous weather.

Head south by the safest and quickest route then sit back and ENJOY the rest of your trip.
  • Winter travel, Either I-20 or I-10. Consider the weather. Not all that cold (especially at nite) in fact many nites are downright mild on I-10. Then...if you overnight at campgrounds, far more are open (than I-40 or even I-20) on I-10.

    In a nutshell....stay SOUTH.

I-40 across AZ was pretty bad most of last week. Flagstaff had 3' of snow in 4 days. One full day of sun usually clears the highways up but roads in town can take several days.

Check weather before driving I-40 thru NM and AZ. Also note that there are few RV campgrounds open around Flagstaff and Williams in the winter but there are some.
  • Watch the weather. If a big low goes east from Cali then watch out for severe weather, tornadoes in Miss, Ala and east. We had to outrun one which almost caught us last Feb in Pensacola. Otherwise it should be OK on the interstates.
  • Buy a Midland weather radio that can operate both ac/DC so you can track the weather 24/7.
  • So far the weather has been pretty mild across I-40. But that doesn't mean there won't be a blizzard about the time you leave. Check the forecast and prepare to go farther south, or to stop somewhere and sit the weather out.
  • Don't hesitate dropping down to I20 - I10 if you see bad weather coming.
    Been there done that.
  • Get South to I20 as quickly as possible. If weather is bad get to I10 as quickly as possible.
