As was at least hinted at in the posts above, colder (i.e. O or well below) temps are better for winter driving. Be wary of roads that are experiencing a Chinook or that are simply (as noted) high enough to have a warm inversion. Also be wary of polished ice at intersections in towns. Living in SC Alaska, this is the reason I drive 4WD vehicles....as noted, they probably aren't otherwise necessary.
Whether due to weather (:) ) or otherwise, it's the polished or water-slick ice that will get you, not the either snow-packed or bare road at -20.
