I'm not a local resident but I drive that same route yearly. You didn't say what direction you're heading, but if coming from the west and heading north on I-35 I always stay on I-40 and take the I-44 exit north (exit 147B) and follow I-44 until it merges into I-35. I tried the Kilpatrick turnpike once and didn't feel like it was any faster than the one I mentioned. Traffic isn't that bad, but there is a little construction that slows down a little.
