On Our Way to the Maritimes

no real questions yet, we're on 5 week trip from sw Ontario to the maritimes, furthest point will be cape Breton

done it before but I thought id share our places we stop and anybody can add suggestions

right now, we are in Ottawa for the night, too hot to stay and enjoy, so into Quebec today, maybe as far as riviere du loup then onto gaspe

stayed here in Ottawa: http://www.ottawaspoplargrovecamp.com/ , nice quiet cg, only downside is the occasional airplane, wifi at the trailer, definitely recommended

great pizza here: http://hotpizzeria.ca/ , 5 minutes away, way better than the likes of dominos or pizza hut!!
  • Yep, 2 laners have more to see.

Do you know how to tell what houses, barns, other buildings were built by what peoples in what time period? If you don't chat with someone in some place(s) along the way.* Places settled by Francophones 1600s to 2004, places set up by Anglophones post Acadian era, but pre 1900....... You can see all of these from the two lane roads, especially if you don't rush your drive.

    * Often local tourism associations have some 'historians', who are working to preserve heritage buildings.

One of the most interesting 'visits' I've done was a tour of the reconstructed Viking Village at L'Anse aux Medows, NL......what materials made the original structure, what is used to repair and retain the structure as the Vikings would have done. Our tour guide was the granddaughter of the chap who showed that site to Norse explorer, Helge Ingestad, and Anne Stine Ingstad his anthropologist spouse. (granted that's Atlantic Canada).

  • due to a late start yesterday and heavy Friday traffic, we didn't get far!
went north around montreal(jolliette) and took the ferry across the st Lawrence river to sorel. then on to trois riviere area. spent the night at Nicolet, just south of the st lawerence

nice cg, but small crowded sites and it was packed. very family oriented

today on towards gaspe. we're taking secondary highways rather than #20 or 40

Do you want suggestions of places to eat on the way?

& BTW have you picked up the offshore islands on your rambles: Campobello, Deer Island, Grand Manan. There is the direct ferry to Grand Manan and the one from Campobello, Deer Island, then Grand Manan.

& from my memory, granted good eats and camping on Campobello, bestest of the eats source is THE BAKERY on Grand Manan. Essential to be there before opening hour.

we have been there before, the deer island ferry is free but towing a trailer on deer island would be hairy!! good day trip from st Andrews though
the little ferry from deer island to Campobello is also a nice trip, drive down the beach and onto the ferry!
  • Also stayed at Poplar Grove, August 2014. A bit out of the way, but drove to the Car Park and rode the buses. Very impressed finding out the buses have their own freeway into the city of Ottawa. Our memory of Ottawa was still very vivid later on, in our trip, and finding out in Washington, DC that a soldier guarding the War Memorial was killed and the rifle bearing extremist later stormed the Parliament building. Everything had seemed so quiet and well directed there to us, then.

  • Leaving August 26, back home when we want. First trip to Northeast and Atlantic Canada.
  • Enjoy your holiday. Next year we're heading to the Maritimes for a very long vacation. Will be visiting friends and family along the way.
