Because food and alcohol are more in the maritime's we go down via Canadian route and home through US. We live just above the NH/Vermont border so technically it is a little shorter via US but we have no hassles going into US with food and alcohol or coming back into Canada the same day and having to prove none was brought in the states. Coming home we usually stay a couple of days and come home with our duty free allowances.
